The Mail Pouch Express got its start in a pub in Schnecksville, a little town about
8 miles north of Allentown. For nearly ten years, beginning in the early eighties
and continuing into the nineties, the band performed on a weekly basis at Ye Ole
Ale House. Their reputation for tight harmonies and intricate instrumentals
featuring the five string banjo, mandolin, fiddle and upright bass soon earned the
band a devoted following not only in the Lehigh Valley but up and down the entire
East Coast. From the Musicfest in Bethlehem to the Carter Family Homestead in
Hilton Virginia, the band was a frequent favorite in the festival scene. When they
finally made it to the Lincoln Center Out of Doors for a summer concert series in
New York, the band felt they had reached the pinnacle of success.
Recently, the band has begun performing again with the help of some original
members as well as some newcomers. The revival is the brainchild of Dave Stever,
leader, business manager, and founding member of the Mail Pouch Express. Dave’s
heart has never left the Mail Pouch Express, or its fans, and he believes the music
performed and recorded by the band over two decades ago deserves to be heard again.
According to Dave Stever who plays fiddle for the band and sings tenor and high
baritone parts: there are so many great bluegrass bands performing today that in
order to get some recognition, a band must present something different and special
for their audiences. Dave believes that tight three and four part harmonies are
what the Mail Pouch can deliver.
